The Academy Lore
History of the Academy
You could say the first spark of the Academy started when a crippled boy was born to a small Latino family. From day one, it was declared Enrique Capello would never be able to walk. And that seemed to be that…
Until Enrique entered high school and a wisp found him. This wisp befriended him because of what he needed most: a way to move around and give his life a purpose. The powers it bestowed upon him were a set of wings, and a profession: the gifts of a technopath. With the help and friendship of his wisp, Enrique was able to transform his life, and came across quite a bit of money selling his inventions and other things he made.
When he was around 38, Enrique came across a fiery young girl who seemed to be in a bit of trouble. Word of mouth had it she was the cause of several fires set to buildings, and—most recently—the burning down of an old shed in the backyard of her home. After getting some information on her, Enrique came to the conclusion that she was an Esper like him, and—upon learning she was a foster kid—decided to help her out. He settled things to lead her away from juvenile detention, and after some time, actually managed to gain custody of her. Beforehand, of course, it took the girl some convincing that he was there to help, not to harm.
Daquiri Laurens was Enrique’s first unofficial student, and she seemed to set him on the path to helping other young Espers. It was only a little over a year later that the man came upon a group of young civilians being attacked by a raging beast. Upon besting the creature, it transformed back into a rebellious, 17-year-old Darius. The boy was a runaway with a bitter outlook on his past and a rather uncontrolled reign over his powers. Enrique took him in as well, and coached him incessantly on how to keep his transformations at bay and under constant regulation.
Enrique brought up Daquiri and Darius together, as their teacher as well as a father figure. Once they were older, he had the idea to start an actual school for Espers, where young—or old—Espers could come to learn more about how to use their powers, as well as have a place where they could be themselves without having to worry about being different. Enrique decided to have an academy built in the rather out-of-the-way place of Hawthorne Valley, Montana, where there was plenty of space for privacy (and collateral damage), but the students could still have contact with the regular world in the neighboring town, as well as go to the local school, Lakeview High.
It is now 2020 and Hawthorne Academy for Gifted Students has been open for 13 years now, with more and more young Espers coming in every year as more wisps appear and the Esper Movement strengthens. The newest addition to the teacher ranks is Carver Halle, who has been teaching for three years now. All of the Academy staff (though it may not seem like it) welcome each new student that joins, and look forward to the thriving years to come.

The Training Room
Engineered by Enrique and monitored by Carver, the training room is an area where the Espers of the academy can run mock missions in simulated locations.
Combining physical programming and a psychic interface, the participants receive full sensory feedback from the simulation, including height, speed, and pain. Any movement and power usage in the training room is actually neutralized, and then transferred into the simulation instead. This way, even real motions and power usage is contained and nonlethal to the participants and surrounding area.
